DIY Wedding Save-the-date Idea

by Nicole Onofrio on October 16, 2011

I went to a wedding last summer and I’ve been holding on to the couple’s save-the-date forever now, so that I could eventually share it with you.  I thought it was a cute and easy do-it-yourself wedding project, not to mention it probably saved the couple at least a $100 or more from having to purchase them.

how-to-plan-a-wedding

Of course, you can play around with the materials to create your own unique save-the-date but to make a similar one, to the one above, you will need:

  • Black and white card stock (heavier paper)
  • Pair of pattern edged scissors
  • Ribbon
  • Clear diamond-like embellishments
  • Hot glue gun or craft glue
  • Access to a computer and printer

To get started on the project…

  • Cut the black paper into rectangles, approximately 6.5″ wide X 4.5″ high.
  • Take the white paper and run it through your computer, printing out your favorite picture and the general details of your wedding such as your full names, date, and city and state of your wedding location.  You can also include some sort of design, in the background of your details.
  • Once the details are printed, take your pattern edged scissors and cut around the edges making a rectangle, approximately 5″ wide X 4″ high.
  • Once the edges are patterned, glue the white paper on to the black paper (so that the black forms a border).
  • Take your ribbon and cut it into 4″ long pieces.  Then glue a piece, vertically, to the right side of the white paper edge.
  • Add your clear diamond-like embellishments in between lines of text.
  • If you want to get tricky, glue a small piece or two of magnetic strip to the back of the black paper so that your guests can hang it on their frig.

To complete the save-the-dates, purchase envelopes and stamps.  For this particular save-the-date, 5×7 greeting card envelopes would work best.

Be sure to make a save-the-date for every family member and friend that you absolutely want at your wedding.  That may sound time consuming but after you make a few of these save-the-dates, you will be on a roll and it will get easier and easier.  If you need help, invite your bridesmaids over to help!
