DIY Wedding Ideas: Chalkboard Sign

by Jehnel on January 20, 2012

Nowadays, there’s a chance that you’ll see a chalkboard sign somewhere.  Maybe even with cute wording to make the event more amazing than it already is.  It may be in a vintage and brightly-painted frame or it could be plastered how-to-plan-a-weddingonto a clay pot, housing some lovely flowers.  Whatever the case, while the sign may look expensive, it doesn’t have to be!  Let everyone think that you dished out money to buy the boards from an exclusive craft store or that you took a bunch of time, effort and money to make them.

A plus to a DIY wedding project like this is that not many materials are required, which means less money spent (yay!).  Go ahead and try it for yourself!

You will need:

  • A plywood board sized and shaped to your liking
  • Spray paint of your color choice
  • Chalkboard paint or chalkboard spray
  • Blue painters’ tape
  • Old clothes or art smock
  • A cute frame (optional)

Step One:

Head outdoors and bring all of the supplies with you, along with your smock or old clothes that you wouldn’t mind getting stained.  Spray paint the board with the color of your choice and then let it dry completely.  Once it has done so, spray on a second coat and let it dry.

Step Two:

Once the paint has dried thoroughly, take the painters’ tape and place it all around the edge of the board.  Make sure that all of the sides are even because you’re creating your border.

wedding-planning-tipsStep Three:

Take your chalkboard paint (or chalkboard spray) and completely coat the plywood.  Let it dry, then add another coat and allow this to dry as well.

Step Four:

Once the chalkboard paint has fully dried, gently take the painters’ tape off and voila!  You have an affordable and beautiful chalkboard with a neatly-made border, and now you’re ready to write anything lovely on it.

Frame Ideas:

If you want to take it a step further, search your local thrift store or consignment store for an inexpensive and unique frame.  You can even go on a scavenger hunt around your house for a frame that needs sprucing up.  Once you find one, sand it down with a piece of sandpaper, if needed.

Then, with the color of your choice, paint it and take a piece of plywood that fits the frame.  Paint it with the chalkboard paint and then apply it to the frame with super glue or Mod Podge (if it doesn’t have a frame backing).  If you want that gorgeous shiny finish, add a layer of Mod Podge and let it dry.
