DIY Wedding Makeup – Finding The Perfect Eye Color

by Jehnel on January 14, 2012

In today’s economy, many brides are cutting back on expenses by doing their own wedding day makeup.  With that said, when it comes time to walk down the aisle, pose for those quintessential wedding pictures and strut your stuff on the dance floor, your makeup has to be next to flawless without bordering into the area of excess.  Ultimately, a natural look is the way to go and this rule still applies to the eyes.

how-to-plan-a-weddingThe biggest plus, that brides often agree on with natural (or neutral) eye makeup, is that it’s classic, elegant, and it holds up well in photos.  With that said, a smokey eye or any heavy eye look can effectively make you look tired and fatigued.  The overall appearance may be something that you regret years later, when flipping through your wedding album.

Don’t get us wrong: we love the smokey eye style but a bride wants to look fresh with that sought-after glow.  Therefore, we think that a natural face is the way to go.  Let your natural eye color and the beauty you were born with shine through!

Try following the color guidelines below for a natural eye makeup look.

Blues: pair your blue eyes with browns, copper tones, or bronzes.  Regardless of whether you have dark blue eyes or light blue eyes, bronzes work best on blue eyes because they perfectly complement the color.

Browns: since brown eyes are relatively dark, they need a strong color to work with.  Purples are often the go-to color for brown eyes but stick with purples that are more plum-colored.  Gold is another color that accentuates this eye color.wedding-tips

Greens: the most unique color out there (only 5% of people in the world have completely green eyes).  Green eyes may seem harder to work with but this is far from the truth.  Green and red are complementary colors but this doesn’t mean that you have to buy a bright red eye shadow.  Look around for colors that have a tint of red in it such as mauves or raisin-colored shadows.

Hazels: hazel eyes are considered another unique eye color because of the array of hues it consist of.  Because of this, many colors assist in amplifying the overall color of hazel eyes. For top color choices, shades of brown and gold suit hazel eyes well.

To finish off your natural eye look, wake up your eyes by putting a dab of champagne-colored or white shimmering shadow near your tear ducts (the innermost corner of your eyes).  Also, replace your black mascara and eyeliner with dark brown.  It’s softer than black and still maintains the same effect that your black mascara and eyeliner would create without being too strong.

Tip: For those using purples (such as plum) or mauves, they can be considered “non-neutral” colors because of their purple or reddish hue.  To combat this, purchase eyeshadows with a matte finish rather than shadows with “satin” or “frost” finishes.  This will lessen any harshness the colors may give off.
