Budget Wedding Menu Ideas
Believe it or not, one element that can make or break a wedding reception is the food. No guest wants to leave a wedding hungry but to the contrary, no bride or groom wants to break their budget on food either.
There have been debates on whether or not a sit down or buffet style dinner is cheaper. However, when it comes down to it, a buffet style dinner can be just as expensive – the more food that is served and the more options that are offered, the more expensive it’s going to be.
Therefore, if you are truly set on having a sit down dinner at your reception, do it! It is possible and at an affordable price. You just have to be smart when it comes to your menu selections.
Whether you hire a caterer or your reception hall is supplying the food, most offer similar menu options. Here we discuss some of the expensive menu selections that you’ll want to avoid, as well as some selections that are typically less expensive.
If you plan on hosting a cocktail reception before dinner, it is easy to get out of control with your selections. Choosing 2 or 3 different hors d’oeuvres or appetizers is plenty. You will want to avoid items such as Lolli-Pop Lamb Chops or Clams Casino. Go basic with a Cheese Display, Vegetable Springs Rolls or Cocktail Franks.
If serving a first course, you will want to avoid items such as Lobster Ravioli, Seafood Bisque and Signature Salads. Stick with a Caesar or Traditional House Salad, or a soup such as Italian Wedding or Minestrone.
For your dinner, avoid Veal Chop or dual entrees such as Surf & Turf or Filet Mignon & Stuffed Jumbo Shrimp (or crab). You are safe with a fish such as Seared Grouper or Salmon, or Chicken (Francaise, Parmesan, Marsala).
Make sure that all entrees include a side(s) such as seasonal vegetables, rice or a baked potato.
Now, for dessert…the best part! Serve your wedding cake as dessert. Add on ice cream or have a tray of mini pasteries placed in the center of every table. Keep away from chocolate fountains and after dinner cordials and cognacs.
Regardless of your selections and how much you’re spending, make sure to do a taste test before deciding on your final wedding menu. You want to make sure that you are serving your guests the best food possible.
